Course Overview & Table of Contents
This course satisfies the federal MATE Act requirement for DEA-registered practitioners. Upon completion, check the attestation box on your DEA registration or renewal form confirming completion of 8 hours of training on opioid and substance use disorder management.

Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion, the practitioner will be able to:

  • Describe the scope of the opioid epidemic and relevant federal legislation
  • Explain the pharmacology and mechanism of action of commonly prescribed opioids and controlled substances
  • Apply DSM-5 criteria to diagnose opioid use disorder and other substance use disorders
  • Identify evidence-based, non-opioid pain management strategies
  • Describe FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD): methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone
  • Apply safe prescribing practices including PDMP use, risk stratification, and naloxone co-prescribing
  • Outline the legal and ethical obligations of DEA-registered practitioners
  • Recognize special considerations for vulnerable populations including pregnant patients, adolescents, and the elderly

This course is designed to meet the Federal MATE Act requirement. Retain your certificate of completion for your records. No DEA reporting is required — practitioners self-attest at time of DEA registration renewal.
